NEW FICTION: TUPAC SHAKUR AND THE END OF THE WORLD by Sandra McDonald | Fiction | Futurismic

Seems like we’re all a little culturally obsessed with impending apocalypse at the moment; a minor flurry of end-of-the-world tales a few years back has grown into an everyman’s meme, with the cinemas full of zombie hordes, desolate wastelands and rugged survivors. That ubiquity has been a bit off-putting, to be honest… I love me a good post-apocalyptic story, but I’ve become a bit bored of them, and didn’t think we’d be publishing one here at Futurismic any time soon.

But Sandra McDonald has managed to prove me wrong, by subverting the cliches and turning the end of the world on its head with some darkly post-modern humour; “Tupac Shakur and the End of the World” is a post-apocalypse yarn for people who are bored of post-apocalypse yarns. Enjoy!

Someone at play, yesterday or early today, helps me wake up bigger.

On a wide sidewalk that I walk on almost daily, off to the side near the curb, I’ve noticed five bricks lying haphazardly near each other.

The bricks are flatter and wider that the average brick, perhaps intended for paving. They’ve been lying there for at least one trip through the moon’s phases, maybe more.

This morning, they are up and at ’em.

Someone has made them be a bit of Stonehenge. Three standing on end, two laid across those three, and suddenly I’m looking down and seeing part of Stonehenge as I’ve seen it in aerial photographs. I’m thinking around the curve of the globe and back in time. However, those folks back then over there moved the Stonehenge stones and decided where to place them, it was awesome that they could and typically human that they wanted to.

Townes Van Zandt in Heartworn Highways – Waitin’ Around To Die (Video)

Watch the guy with the hat as he listens to this song. Brought tears to my eyes.

This is an excerpt from the documentary Heartworn Highways (IMDB, Wikipedia). From Wikipedia:

Heartworn Highways is documentary film by James Szalapski whose vision captured some of the founders of the Outlaw Country movement in Texas and Tennessee in the last weeks of 1975 and the first weeks of 1976.  The film was not released theatrically until 1981.

The documentary covers singer-songwriters whose songs are more traditional to early folk and country music instead of following in the tradition of the previous generation. Some of film’s featured performers are Guy Clark, Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle, David Allan Coe, Rodney Crowell, Gamble Rogers, Steve Young, and The Charlie Daniels Band. The movie features the first known recordings of grammy award winners Steve Earle and Rodney Crowell who were quite young at the time and appear to be students of mentor Guy Clark. Steve Earle was also a big fan of Van Zandt at the time.
